AUTHORITY PRESCRIPTION
- Some PBS medications are restricted and require prior approval from Medicare before a doctor is able to prescribe them on the PBS. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS.
Authority to prescribe an Authority medicine is granted for specific indications and/or for certain patient circumstances. Authority may be obtained by telephone to Medicare Australia (known as "phone approval") or in writing from an authorised delegate of the Minister for Health.
Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number).
Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication.
But still pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has the necessary Authority code.

Information
CARTIA 100mg DUENTRIC coated low dose aspirin
Has your doctor recommended low dose aspirin? You may have been told about the benefits of Cartia.
Cartia helps prevent blood clotting and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with known cardiovascular or cerebovascular disease.
Why choose Cartia?
Duentric coating helps
protect stomach lining from irritation that can be caused by aspirin. Heart protection that is
gentle* on the stomach. Cartia is proudly
Australian made. Why is the Duentric coating on Cartia so important?
Uncoated aspirin is released in the stomach where it may cause irritation to the stomach lining and may also increase the risk of gastric ulcers.
Luckily, not all low dose aspirins are the same.
Cartia has a specially formulated Duentric coating, that prevents the aspirin from being broken down in the stomach. Instead, the aspirin dissolves lower down in the intestines - which means less contact with the stomach lining and less risk of irritation.
How to take Cartia?
The recommended dose is
one Cartia 100 mg low dose
aspirin tablet taken at the
same time every day. Take Cartia with a glass
of water. Cartia should be swallowed whole,
without crushing, chewing or breaking the tablet. Cartia can be taken with or without food.
Food does not
alter the effects of low dose aspirin. Frequently asked questions about Cartia

Easy to swallow and sensible calendar pack.
The smooth orange coating is easier to swallow than the dry larger tablets. Also daily calendar on the pack makes it certain that you don't miss a dose.
